Cleansing a new bracelet is one of the oldest rituals in crystal wearing. The idea is to clear it of the handling it went through before it reached you, then set it with your own intention. The catch: some popular methods, like soaking in salt water, can damage natural stones and the elastic cord. Here is how to do it safely.
When to cleanse
- When the bracelet first arrives
- Once a month, many people choose Purnima (full moon)
- After a difficult period, an illness at home, or a stressful event
- Before an important day, such as Diwali Lakshmi Puja or an exam
Four safe cleansing methods
1. Moonlight. Place the bracelet on a clean cloth near a window or on a balcony overnight, ideally on a full moon. It is gentle, needs no contact, and suits every stone we sell.
2. Dhoop or incense smoke. Light dhoop, agarbatti or camphor and pass the bracelet slowly through the smoke for 30–60 seconds. This fits naturally into a daily puja.
3. Sound. Ring a temple bell, a small bell or a singing bowl close to the bracelet for a minute. Many people chant Om at the same time.
4. A dry bowl of rice or salt. Rest the bracelet on top of dry, uncooked rice or a bowl of rock salt for a few hours. Keep it dry: salt water is the problem, not dry salt nearby.
What to avoid, stone by stone
| Stone | Avoid | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pyrite | Water, salt water | Speeds up oxidation and rusting |
| Turquoise (Firoza) | Water, salt, long sunlight | Porous; can stain or fade |
| Lapis Lazuli | Water, salt | Soft rock; surface can dull |
| Tiger Eye | Hours of harsh sun | Colour can fade over time |
| Sulemani Hakik | Soaking | The stone is hardy, the cord is not |
| Lava Stone | Soap, harsh cleaners | Porous; holds residue |
The Money Magnet Bracelet contains pyrite, so follow the pyrite rule. Our pyrite guide and firoza guide explain why these two stones change with wear.
How to charge it with intention
Charging simply means setting your purpose. After cleansing, hold the bracelet in both palms, close your eyes and state, silently or aloud, what you are wearing it for. Keep it specific: “to stay calm in my exams” works better than “good luck”. Many people place money bracelets near the Lakshmi idol during puja; read our money bracelet comparison to pick the right one. Then put it on the right wrist for that intention, using our guide on which hand to wear it on.
Lava stone is different
Lava stone is charged in a practical way: add 1–2 drops of essential oil to the black beads and the porous rock releases the scent slowly through the day. Our lava stone article suggests oils for calm and focus.
Everyday care
Take the bracelet off before showering, swimming and the gym. Put it on after perfume and lotion. Store it loosely coiled in its pouch. These habits matter more for its life than any ritual. If your stone looks different after months of wear, check whether that is natural ageing in our real vs fake guide. Browse all certified bracelets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wash my crystal bracelet with water?
Avoid it. Water weakens the elastic cord and harms porous or reactive stones like pyrite, turquoise and lapis. Wipe with a dry or barely damp soft cloth instead.
How often should I cleanse my bracelet?
Once when it arrives, then monthly. Many people use Purnima as a reminder.
Can I keep my bracelet in sunlight to charge it?
Moonlight is safer. Long sun exposure can fade turquoise and tiger eye.
Do I need a mantra to charge a bracelet?
No. A clear intention is enough. If you have a mantra from your family tradition or astrologer, you can use it.
